The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority unanimously approved a high-speed rail plan on Thursday.

The plan would link the San Fernando Valley and the Westside through the Sepulveda Pass.

The project is aimed at easing congestion. It’s called the Sepulveda Transit Corridor project and it’s designed to give commuters an alternative to sitting in traffic.

KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian reported that some residents in the South Bay area want the project to be built along a different route. They’re worried about trains being put too close to homes, safety, and noise. Others said the route avoids tearing up Hawthorne Boulevard and helps protect traffic flow and local businesses.

Torrance Mayor George Chen said the city supports extending the K Line, but he believes the most practical option is to use the existing right-of-way. But he said Metro should stick with a route it originally planned a few years ago.

“If you already have a noise generation path on the railroad track and you add the light rail beside it, it's along the same track that everybody is well aware of,” he said.

The project has a target completion date of 2033
