The city of Los Angeles gives out nearly 2 million parking tickets every year. But according to a report by Crosstown, the fines aren’t enough to cover the cost of writing them.

Crosstown’s analysis of city data found that L.A. collected $110 million in parking fines during the last fiscal year, but salaries, equipment, and other costs for the parking enforcement division totaled more than $176 million.

The shortfall in parking fines – once a reliable source of revenue – is contributing to the city’s growing budget deficit, which is projected to hit $1 billion in the next fiscal year.

A spokesperson for the city’s Department of Transportation told Crosstown that staffing cuts have led to fewer tickets being issued. Suspended parking regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic also led to a steep drop in citations, and four years later, the revenue still hasn’t fully rebounded.
