It's official: Your L.A. sanitation bills will increase by 22% next month and more than double over the next few years.

Starting in October, the bi-monthly charge on your LADWP bill for sewer fees will jump to about $92.40; by July 2028, it will reach approximately $155.48.

Councilmember Traci Park, who was initially against the rate hike, is now for it but says she is still not completely satisfied. "I think this is all going to come as a blindside to ratepayers," Park said.

The argument for this fee increase is to pay for long-deferred DWP maintenance that is blamed for contaminating Los Angeles' beaches. Sanitation officials say nearly a third of city pipes are older than 90 years, well past the usual life cycle of 60-80 years.

"I want a future where sewer discharges are an oddity of the past, and our beaches and coastline are open for families across the region, especially on the hottest weekends of summer. That is the future we have to deliver," said Park.

The ordinance passing with three votes against, underscores just how controversial it has been among L.A. City Council members.
