United Teachers Los Angeles is demanding automatic annual pay raises and pushing for policies that challenge President Donald Trump’s agenda on diversity and immigration.

According to the L.A. Times, the union wants a 3.25% salary increase per year during the first 10 years of employment – more than 26 times the current annual bump. They’re also calling for increased support for LGBTQIA+ and immigrant students, along with "targeted investment” in recruiting BIPOC, multilingual, and immigrant teachers.

The L.A. Times reports that LAUSD officials declined to comment on the demands, but said they’re concerned about dwindling reserves and a potential loss of future federal funding.

UTLA has gone on strike twice since 2019 and won pay hikes as high as 30%.
