Los Angeles is going to spend $250,000 installing numerous license plate cameras in some San Fernando Valley neighborhoods.

The new surveillance systems will be placed in District 12, which covers Granada Hills, Northridge, Porter Ranch and Chatsworth.

KNX News’s Craig Fiegener spoke to City Councilmember John Lee, who represents the district.

“We've seen an increase in home burglaries in my district, in some areas as high as 103% over the last year,” he said. “These license plate readers, what they will do is we're going to be trying to put them at different freeway exits and maybe some major thoroughfares to identify cars. And when they enter our district, if there are any warrants attached to that license plate, if it's a stolen vehicle, if it's a stolen plate, the local division will be notified.”

Lee said his goal is to have these cameras at all major entrances to his district, however, he couldn’t say exactly how many there will be.

The cameras will not be utilized to issue tickets.

The city council voted 11-1 to approve the cameras. The lone no vote was Eunisses Hernandez.
