In an effort to help residents avoid extreme heat, Rep. Tony Cárdenas is set Monday to present a check for $2.5 million in federal money to the city of Los Angeles for up to 30 shade structures designed to fit over bus benches in his San Fernando Valley Congressional district.
Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath and other regional leaders were expected to participate in the check presentation.
The $2.5 million is part of a $26 million federal funding package geared toward the Northeast San Fernando Valley.
The overall package is intended to "support job creation, youth programs, mental health care, community empowerment, improvements to healthcare and more," Cárdenas' office said in a statement.
