LOS ANGELES (KNX) - A protester was arrested Friday morning outside the entrance to the city council chamber at LA City Hall.
Unlike other protestors who’ve been arrested for disobeying orders to leave— following outbursts, this person was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery on a police officer.
At around 10:30 a.m., a protester disrupted a Cinco de Mayo presentation given by embattled Councilmember Kevin de León, calling the councilmember a racist. Council President Paul Krekorian ordered the disruptor to be removed from the council chamber.
Video captured by KNX News reporter Craig Fiegener shows the person being directed out the door by several police officers. While the door is closing behind him, however, someone appears to push the door forcefully from the other side, hitting an officer in the chest.
Officers rushed out and arrested the protester. He was booked on suspicion of battery on a police officer, a misdemeanor.
This is the fourth arrest inside L.A. City Council chamber this year. Three of the four arrests have been connected to protests against de León.
De León has defied widespread calls to resign due to his role in a secretly-recorded conversation where he and several other officials made racist comments while attempting to manipulate the redistricting process.
