VAN NUYS (CNS) - Firefighters knocked down a fire inside a one-story commercial building in Van Nuys Monday where they discovered an illegal marijuana growing operation.

Reported at 6:05 p.m., the blaze at 14700 W. Bessemer St. impacted an 8,500-square-foot building housing an upholstery shop and an auto body shop, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

The department dispatched 40 firefighters to the blaze and needed 23 minutes to knock down the flames, Prange said.
