
LOS ANGELES (KNX) – On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department revealed the name of the officer involved in the North Hollywood Burlington store shooting that left a 14-year-old girl and assault suspect dead.
The department identified the officer as Officer William Jones, according to City News Service.
On Dec. 23, police responded to a report of man assaulting a woman inside a North Hollywood Burlington store and that the suspect was believed to be an active shooter.
When officers arrived, they found a woman bleeding on the floor, badly beaten.
Three shot were fired at the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Daniel Elena Lopez. One of those stray bullets went through the wall of a dressing room, striking 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta.
Officer Jones, who was assigned to the North Hollywood division, was placed on administrative leave.
Police Chief Michel R. Moore released the following statement:
“This chaotic incident resulting in the death of an innocent child is tragic and devastating for everyone involved. I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl’s life and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family. My commitment is to conduct a thorough, complete and transparent investigation into the circumstances that led up to this tragedy and provide the family and public with as much information as possible. I have directed the release of the critical incident video by Monday, December 27th, which will include the 9-1-1 calls, radio transmissions, body worn video and any CCTV and other evidence gathered at this preliminary stage.”
The California Department of Justice is investigating the shooting.
