LAPD warning motorists of potentially dangerous festive trend

Some people like to take festive decorating to an extreme, and the LAPD says a recent trend on the road has motorists decking out their cars with Christmas lights, creating a potentially dangerous distraction.

While extremely festive-looking, a car completely covered in LED light strings of blue, red, green, and white draws a lot of attention.

"There could be a point where there could be an impairment to driving depending on the brightness of the lights and the LEDs," LAPD West Traffic Detective David Holmes cautions.

Holmes tells KNX News' Pete Demetriou that light-covered cars are a new phenomenon in his division, and while there is no specific law against them, officers will cite drivers on a case-by-case basis.

"There are other laws that can be used to interpret this as a distraction," Holmes said, adding that officers will evaluate each instance to determine if the lights reach the level of a citable offense.

Ultimately, police say everyone is responsible for their driving, and though it's natural to glance over when a car wrapped in holiday LEDs drives by, remember to keep your eyes on the road.
