LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Los Angeles Unified School District is still on track to bring kids back to in-person learning Tuesday, but all sports and sports-related events will be postponed until Friday, according to district officials.

Across the United States and in Los Angeles County, new case numbers are off the charts, which is why administrators have decided to keep an eye on COVID-19 infection numbers before determining if it is safe to resume sports.

School Board Member Jackie Goldberg explained what the district has planned in the days leading up to Friday.

“Our goal is to find out and take some samples and tests of the athletic students and to find out whether or not we can do that,” she said. “We will reschedule all athletic events being postponed.”

The families of athletics students have already been notified, according to Goldberg. She added that all staff and students going back to campus Tuesday must have proof of a negative COVID-19 test in order to return.

While cases skyrocket — and the County continues to report record-breaking daily numbers, Goldberg said this time around, school may just be the safest place for students.

“Our transmission rate, though higher than it’s ever been, is about half of the [L.A. County] rate,” she said. “So students are actually safer at school than they are at home.”

The halt on athletics will not affect drill team or band members - who will still be allowed to practice outdoors with masks on, Goldberg told KNX.
