LAUSD cell phone ban goes into effect

The Los Angeles Unified School District’s ban on students using cell phones went into effect on Tuesday.

The LAUSD Board approved the ban in June 2024.

Schools in the district will use different methods for enforcing the ban. While some schools will have students put their phones in boxes and other special equipment, other schools will have students keep their phones in their backpacks.

A couple of students at Venice High School told KNX News’ Jon Baird that their phones were going in a box during their homeroom period at 8:30 a.m. The kids will not get them until the end of the day.

Some students at the school told Baird they were against the ban.

“It’s kind of dumb but there’s no need for us to turn in our cell phones,” one student said. “We need our cell phone in case of an emergency.”

“I feel like it’s pointless because I feel like the school doesn’t pay for our phones, we do,” another student said. “I feel like we should have the right to have our phones whenever we want.”

Some parents, however, told Baird they support the ban.

“My kids didn't get smartphones until this December because once the cell phone ban went into effect, I felt comfortable giving them smartphones,” one woman said.

The district wants the students focused on learning and wants to limit cyber bullying on social media.

Board member Nick Melvoin, who spearheaded the proposal, told L.A.’s Morning News the ban isn’t a punishment.

“We've heard a lot of feedback from students and definitely their teachers that when kids are off their phones, they're more present. They're happier,” he said. “So my hope is that folks will willingly embrace this. Maybe not right away, maybe not our high school seniors who have had years of having their phones, but eventually that this will be something the students appreciate.”

He added the district will look at what method works best for keeping students away from their phones.

In addition to phones, the district's ban includes smartwatches and earbuds. Exceptions will be made for emergencies, health needs, and students with disabilities.
