As the Los Angeles Unified School District prepares for hundreds of graduation ceremonies to take place over the next two days, officials are assuring parents and students that the district will do everything possible to protect them from immigration officials.

During a press conference on Monday, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said he’ll do everything possible to make sure everybody is safe and secure.

“I will put my job on the line to protect a 5-year-old, an 11-year-old, an 11th grader, or a soon-to-be graduate of this Los Angeles Unified,” he said.

He added that parents who are worried about immigration officials showing up to the ceremonies will be allowed onto the graduation sites quickly to avoid waiting in line.

“We also have authorized the principals to allow parents to remain at the venue for as long as it takes, should there be any immigration enforcement action around the area where the graduations are taking place,” he said.

At the press conference, Carvalho noted that district officials have seen the feds waiting near some campuses.

“As I'm addressing you, there are two schools in our community that within a couple of blocks we see federal vans parked,” he said. “No action has been taken, but we interpret those actions as intimidation.”

This comes amid ongoing protests against immigration raids across L.A County.
