The iconic LAX sign that greets travelers as they drive into the airport along Century Blvd. is temporarily being taken down. However, it’s not exactly clear when it’ll be back up.
The sign is going to be put in storage for the time being while a major roadway improvement project, which won’t be completed until 2030, is happening. Work crews have already started the process of dismantling the “X” in the sign. It’s estimated it’ll take one week to dismantle all three letters in the sign.
“It's pretty iconic. It's one of the first few things you think of when you think of LAX when you come here, so, you know, just the presence of it not being there. Personally, I think I would consider it a landmark, you know, one of LA's landmarks, I would say,” Gerardo, a traveler, told KNX News’ Jon Baird.
Airport officials said the sign will be put into a storage yard across the street from LAX.
“While the LAX sign will be taking a break from the spotlight, our teams and contracting partners will be hard at work on roadway improvements that will provide long-term benefits to employees, travelers and our surrounding communities, creating a world-class airport experience for years to come,” Michael Christensen, Chief Airport Development Officer, Los Angeles World Airports, said in a press release.

It’ll eventually be reinstalled at a location that will “ensure compatibility with the new road designs and integrated into the broader improvements planned for the area,” airport officials said.
