A community meeting was held in Long Beach after two killings happened over the span of two weeks along Second Street in Belmont Shore.

KNX News’ Pete Demetriou reported that there were calls for changes in safety protocols at the meeting. Community members were being listened to by the police department, Long Beach Councilmember Kristina Duggan, and others.

Some residents had ideas on how to keep the streets safe.

“Well, I'm hoping there'll be a stronger police presence that the community will have a chance to feel like it's heard that the council person may have gotten a couple of ideas,” said Paul Derry, a community member.

Some community members weren’t too happy about this meeting. They feel like more police on footbeats in the area would help keep violent crime down, which wasn’t addressed.

One person brought up the idea of changing policies around liquor licenses and the time that bars and restaurants are allowed to serve alcohol until. The councilwoman said she wants to see some data points on whether or not changes that drastic need to happen.
