A legendary Watts-based charity marks its 63rd year this Thursday. It was founded by local icon Sweet Alice to ensure kids have a meaningful holiday gift. This year, 300 LAUSD students got brand-new bikes.

KNX News reporter Craig Fiegener spoke with Sweet Alice, who said these kids would likely only receive such a gift through their program. "Teachers pick; they pick the ones that don't have anything, that's who they sent us," she said.

The soon-to-be 90-year-old Alice chooses to continue this charitable work after 63 years because she can remember what it was like to grow up with nothing, "I mean, because when I was little, we didn't have nothing either. It was the same way. We didn't ever have nothing."

Her son Robert said, "All year long, they have a competition, and the best kids that improve in school, the attendance and everything, that's the grade to get it."

For the kids to be eligible for the giveaways, which include bikes, backpacks, and other goodies, they must maintain good attendance and grades throughout the school year.
