As Earth Day 2024 nears, we highlight 18-year-old Edie Markovich, who is pushing her limits to elevate the voices of organizations fighting to protect the environment.

Markovich is a swimmer who takes on seemingly impossible challenges to bring awareness to the issues plaguing the world's oceans and waterways.
Markovich tells Heroes Producer Heather Jordan that just last month, she swam for more than 12 hours straight! - "25 miles at the ELAC swim stadium, raising money for Heal the Bay and for our school's local food pantry," she said.

The Outswimming Hunger founder also swims long distances in large bodies of water, such as the Hudson Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
"I just recently did a swim in Croatia around the island of Solta...right next to the island where my family is from," said Markovich, and that was a 20-hour swim! She said it was grueling and insane but beautiful.
Aside from her incredible swimming, Markovich is an intellectual phenom. She entered college at Cal State L.A. when she was only 14 years old and started her master's at 17. She's also a tutor for East L.A. College.

"Authenticity is such an integral part of our existence. I'm not even thinking of it as something special; it's just what I need to do - what I feel compelled to do," said Markovich.
