LANCASTER, Calif. (KNX) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 43-year-old man found unresponsive following a dog attack Tuesday afternoon at a homeless encampment in Lancaster.
At least one other person was injured in the attack, but Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said the deceased victim did not appear to have died fromf being bitten by the dog, and a cause of death would be determined during his autopsy.

The attack was reported as a “medical rescue call” at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 20th Street West and Avenue G, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner. The caller said several people had been attacked by a dog and one man was unconscious, Koerner said.
Responding deputies had the unresponsive man taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators learned a physical altercation occurred between the deceased and another man outside of a motor home in the encampment, according to Koerner.
The other man’s dog got loose from inside the motor home and attacked the victim and at least one more person who tried to intervene, Koerner said. The victim was able to walk away but stumbled some distance off and fell to the ground.
The dog’s owner was detained and is cooperating with the investigation, and the dog was removed from the area by animal control, Koerner said.
