Officers saw the suspect leaning against a light pole at South Euclid Street and West Orangethorpe Avenue at 10:48 p.m. Sunday and took him into custody, police said.

A routine check on the man just after midnight showed he appeared to be sleeping and OK, police said.

Another check at 1:05 a.m. found the suspect "unresponsive," prompting a jailer to call for assistance and police attempted to revive him until firefighters took over, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A routine investigation into the man's death will be done by the Orange County District Attorney's Office. The man's name was not immediately released.
