LOS ANGELES (KNX) — A man was stabbed in what authorities have described as a “random attack” in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon. The victim claimed he was stabbed several times in the neck by a perpetrator he described as homeless.

Relatives of William Yu told CBS L.A. he was walking near the intersection of Broadway and Alpine Street when the suspect, armed with a knife, approached him. The alleged assailant then stabbed him 10 times in the neck and shoulder areas, Yu said.

“He’s definitely traumatized and exhausted from the ordeal,” said David Yu, William’s brother, told CBS.

Witnesses called 911 as the pair grappled on the street.

“My brother says he tried to move out of the way,” David Yu said. “The guy grabbed him and started punching him.”

At some point, William Yu realized the blows were not punches, but rather slashes from a knife. He was able to wrestle the attacker to the ground, at which point police arrived to arrest him.

Yu was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated with “a lot of stitches,” his brother said. Yu was released from the hospital on Thursday and was said to be recovering at home.

Authorities have identified the alleged attacker as 50-year-old Timothy Mears. He was being held on a charge of felony mayhem.
