Man suspected of Long Beach killing taken into custody

A 37-year-old man suspected in the Long Beach death of a man whose body was found in the University Park area of Los Angeles was behind bars Friday.

Jose Raul Gonzalez, of Long Beach, was arrested Thursday in the 500 block of East 72nd Street and booked on suspicion of murder, according to the Long Beach Police Department. He was being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

Gonzalez is suspected in the death of a man whose body was found last Saturday in the 2600 block of South Maple Street in Los Angeles, police said. The Los Angeles Police Department initially investigated the case, but determined the crime had occurred in the city of Long Beach.

According to Long Beach police, the victim suffered from multiple unspecified injuries.

"Through LBPD's homicide investigation, detectives determined the crime occurred at the 72nd Street Equestrian Park after the victim and suspect were engaged in a dispute over property," police said in a statement.

No other details were immediately released.

The victim's name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
