A 38-year-old man who walked away from the Acton Conservation Camp was taken into custody Thursday in Merced County.

Julian Ochoa Ruiz, who walked away from the camp on Oct. 19, was captured at approximately 5:10 p.m. Thursday in Planada by agents from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the department announced.

Ruiz was admitted to the camp from Merced County on Feb. 14 to serve a three-year, eight-month sentence for discharging a firearm in an inhabited dwelling and evading or attempting to evade a peace officer.

Ruiz will be rehoused in a higher security area at Valley State Prison in Chowchilla and his case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for consideration of escape charges, according to the department.

Since 1977, 99% of all escapees from an adult institution, camp or community-based program have been apprehended, according to the department.
