A body found in the lake at Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook was that of a man in his 20s, the Los Angeles County Medical examiner's office reported Friday.

The body was found about 9:10 a.m. Thursday in the lake at the park at 905 El Segundo Blvd., after county fire department personnel responded to a report of a possible drowning.

A KTLA report indicated firefighters in a boat could be seen retrieving the body about 30 minutes after being dispatched.

The medical examiner will determine how the man died, but if he drowned, it would be the latest in a string of such deaths at the lake, according to community activist Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable.

Hutchinson was to speak at press briefing Friday morning to call for county officials to increase safety measures at the park, and particularly South Lake, as the body of water is commonly known.

The community activist wants more warning signs and surveillance of the lake in place.

``Unfortunately, the number of drowning victims at the Magic Johnson Park Lake is a signal that more must be done to warn users of the potential hazard at the lake," Hutchinson declared in a statement in advance of the news briefing.
