Jesus Gaytan was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on Wednesday night, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies from the sheriff's Moreno Valley station responded to a call at 9 p.m. Wednesday reporting a carjacking in the 24000 block of Sunnymead Boulevard.
Lt. Sam Morovich said Gaytan allegedly pointed a handgun at a victim exiting a business and ordered the victim to drive him on state Route 60.
The victim initially complied; however, he later physically fought back and escaped from the vehicle, suffering minor injuries, authorities said. The suspect allegedly drove away in possession of the victim's vehicle.
Deputies from the Perris station located the stolen vehicle near Perris Boulevard and Harley Knox Boulevard, where they detained Gaytan without incident later that night at 11:30 p.m.
According to the sheriff's department, deputies found a "sizeable amount of methamphetamine on Gaytan's person" and a BB gun believed to be used in the carjacking.
Background information on Gaytan was unavailable.
Anyone with information regarding the alleged carjacking was urged to contact Deputy Padila of the Moreno Valley station at 951-486-6700.
