Californians who lost their homes in disasters will soon be able to apply for mortgage relief, officials announced Thursday.

Anyone whose home was made uninhabitable because of a declared disaster between January 2023 and January 2025 could receive a grant of up to $20,000 – and you don’t have to pay it back.

“Whether you need help with future mortgage payments, paying down a mortgage forbearance, or catching up on any payments you've missed after being affected by a disaster, the CalAssist Mortgage Fund is here to help,” said Rebecca Franklin with the California Housing Finance Agency.

There are eligibility requirements for the $105 million in grants, including income limits. But Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said not to let those requirements stop you from reaching out and seeing what help is available.

“Right now we're working to get the word out that FEMA still has money available to help renters with their rent. People don't know that,” Barger told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “So just because you may not qualify for this doesn't mean there aren't other programs out there.”

The application will go live at CalAssistMortgageFund.org on June 12. Affected homeowners are advised to get their paperwork ready ahead of time, because the grants are offered on a first come, first served basis.
