A motion by Los Angeles County Board Chair Supervisor Janice Hahn that calls for the investigation of polyfluoroalkyl substances, or forever chemicals, in the county’s drinking water was approved by a unanimous vote on Tuesday.

It comes after a survey by the United States Geological Survey found that at least 45% of the nation’s tap water contains PFAS and that Southern California was one of the areas where forever chemicals were most commonly found.

“These synthetic chemicals are known to build up in our bodies and never break down in the environment,” Hahn said. “Studies have linked them to decreased fertility, increased risk of high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, certain cancers, and liver and immune system damage.”

Hahn’s motion calls on the State Water Resources Control Board to “index and catalogue which water systems are/are not currently testing for PFAS in the 206 community water systems in the County,” as  well as “potential state and federal funding to support these efforts.”
