A motorist who allegedly made an unsafe turn at an intersection in Long Beach was killed in a collision with a big rig, police said Thursday.
The man died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 4 p.m. Wednesday at Anaheim Street and West Ninth Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.
"The preliminary investigation revealed a 2009 Lexus ES350 was traveling northbound on West Ninth Street just south of Anaheim Street," police said in a statement.
"A 2014 Volvo semi-truck was driving southbound in the intersection of Ninth Street and Anaheim Street when the Lexus made an unsafe turn to westbound Anaheim Street and collided head-on with the semi-truck," police said.
The truck driver, a 30-year-old resident of Santa Ana, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said. The trucker's name was not released.
"Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this collision," police said.
