Multiple campaign employees for Rep. Eric Swalwell’s bid for California governor have abruptly quit, including Swalwell's top liaison to organized labor groups, according to Politico.
It comes after the San Francisco Chronicle published an article in which a former staffer claims Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice.
The candidate issued a statement calling the allegations false and outrageous.
“For nearly 20years, I have served the public as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women,” the statement continued. “I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action."
Swalwell opened up a six-point lead over his closest Democratic challenger with 18% in the latest polling, moving into the top two behind only Republican Steve Hilton.
