LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A homicide suspect was sought this morning after being erroneously released from jail, a mistake that prompted the shutdown of the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway in Los Angeles for more than an hour while sheriff's deputies searched for the man.
Steven Manzo, 24, of Hawaiian Gardens was charged with murder by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office on March 9, 2020 in the July 26, 2018 murder of Salvador Corrales, 24, according to Long Beach police.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Manzo on Monday, according to court records.
Manzo was released at 2:12 p.m. Tuesday, and the sheriff's inmate locator indicates the reason was that the case was dismissed.
"Upon further review, it was determined he should not have been released," said Long Beach police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria.
"We contacted LASD to assist with his apprehension. LASD set up a containment perimeter, but they were not able to take him into custody. Our department will work with local agencies to make every effort to locate suspect Manzo to take him safely into custody."
The southbound Hollywood Freeway was shut down from 3:44 p.m. until 4:55 p.m. Tuesday before the search was called off, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Manzo was arrested March 5, 2020, according to Long Beach police.
Officers found evidence of a shooting but no victim at 9:05 p.m. July 26, 2018 when they were dispatched to a call of shots fired in the 6700 block of Cherry Avenue.
Corrales' body was later found inside a vehicle in the 5800 block of Florence Avenue in Bell Gardens, and evidence linked the shots fired in Long Beach with the death of Corrales, police said.
