LOS ANGELES (KNX) — California Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (D.-North Hollywood) announced on Monday that he would not seek election to the newly formed 44th Assembly District, but instead plans to run to replace Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian in 2024.

At that time, Krekorian will be barred from seeking reelection due to term limits.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve the residents of the 46th Assembly District in our state Capitol for the past 10 years, so please know that I have not come to this decision lightly,” Nazarian said in a statement on Monday.

Nazarian said although he seemed to have a “clear road to victory” in winning representation of the new 44th district, it would come at the expense of “extreme divisiveness that would have torn our communities apart at a time when we we need unity and healing rather than division.”

The new district was created during last year’s redistricting process and includes parts of both Nazarian’s 46th and Assemblymember Laura Friedman’s (D.-Glendale) 43rd — swathes of Burbank, Glendale, La Crescenta, and Sunland-Tujunga.

Friedman announced earlier she is planning to run in the 44th. Meanwhile, Nazarian said Monday he planned to run in 2024 to replace Krekorian to represent District 2 on the L.A. City Council; a district including North Hollywood, Valley Glen, and Toluca Lake.
