A new survey found that nearly half of Californians don’t trust the health care system.
The survey, funded by the California Health Care Foundation, found that 90 percent of those polled trust nurses and 84 percent trust their doctors; however, 46 percent don’t trust the health care system much or at all.
Respondents of the survey said the cost of treatment is the number one issue, and that shorter wait times for doctors’ appointments, knowing the costs upfront, and getting information that is easy to understand would also help build trust.
Kristoff Stremikis, the director of the foundation’s Market Analysis and Insight team, said this survey was a “wake-up call” for people who work in the health care industry, as well as those looking to improve it.
“Look, this is a really complicated area and there's lots of things we can do,” he told KNX News’ Jon Baird. “We also can make people's experience in the healthcare system easier to understand. We can make sure that providers have time with them so that they can be seen and heard. All of those things impact trust.”
The survey also found that many residents are deeply skeptical about the direction the health care system is moving, especially the spread of health misinformation, and that the rise of artificial intelligence will just make things worse.
