New L.A. speed camera program starts Jan. 1

A new speed camera pilot program goes into effect Jan. 1 in Los Angeles, Glendale, and Long Beach – but it could be months before those cameras are up and running.

The cameras were greenlit by a state law authorizing six California cities to implement speed cameras beginning on Jan. 1. After a 60-day introductory period, drivers who go 11 miles per hour over the speed limit will receive fines starting at $50.

But first, the cities have to solicit community input to identify which roads are considered high-injury. It could take until next summer, or even late 2024 before the cameras are operational.

Supporters say the cameras will save lives. But opponents, including the ACLU and Human Rights Watch, say that the expanded surveillance and fines will disproportionately harm communities of color.

The pilot programs will last five years, or until 2032, whichever date comes sooner.
