About two dozen Los Angeles Unified School District families who have experienced homelessness now have a place to call home in Sun Valley.
LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the number of school-aged children experiencing homelessness increased from 12,000 to over 15,000 in the last year. He told KNX News’ Margaret Carrero this number could be an undercount because a lot of the data is based on self-reporting.
“One would easily assume that there are so many families and so many unaccompanied teenagers who are probably couch surfing, who are living in substandard conditions in someone else's garage or worse,” Carvalho said.
He joined other officials to celebrate the opening of Sun King Apartments, a 26-unit supportive housing complex in Sun Valley.

“This is an idea, this is a project whose time has come, and it's one that we need to replicate and amplify very quickly,” Carvalho said.
Rick Schroeder, president & CEO of Many Mansions, said the complex will provide youth services, including an after-school tutoring program and a summer camp. He also said there will be case management onsite, skill-building workshops, and events.
