Gov. Gavin Newsom is being criticized by Republicans for highlighting what says is the success of the electric vehicle market.

The California Energy Commission announced 25.7% of new cars sold in the state during the second quarter of the year were zero emission vehicles.

“It's 10,000 more clean cars sold than the previous quarter, continuing to outpace the rest of the nation in this clean car transition,” Newsom said in a video posted to X.

However, California Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones said Newsom isn’t telling the whole story.

“We haven't moved that far in the last 10 years,” he said. “So, to come out and say that we're at 25% sales, well, great, but we're still only at I think 4% of the total vehicles on the road are electric vehicles.”

Jones said he’s not opposed to EVs, but experts told him that the state’s EV mandate may never be met.

Under the state mandate, every new car sold must be a zero emission vehicle by 2035.
