Only 7% of LA Unified high school students have returned to reopened campuses, according to the Los Angeles Times -- far less than expected.
The low turnout reflects widespread criticism by students and their parents of the 'Zoom in a Room' instruction offered where kids stay in the same classroom and still do much of their learning online.
The numbers are higher for going back in the lower grades (about 30%) of elementary school children have returned and 12% of middle school students.
LA Schools Superintendent Austin Beutner said in his video update Monday morning that he wants a school-based student vaccination campaign to begin before the end of the current school year.
Most of the 465,000 students in the district have not had in-person classes on campus since March 13, 2020, the Times reports, most of which is a result of choice by families.
Several people in the community told the Times they were not satisfied that the schools were safe, and some said the district’s safety guidelines were too extreme.
