With heavy rain on the way, crews are working to prep the Palisades Fire burn area for potential mudflows while residents hunker down to ride out the storm.

The Army Corps of Engineers and Public Works crews have set up sandbags and plastic sheeting to minimize mud and debris flows. One man who lives at the bottom of Sunset Blvd. hopes it will be enough to prevent damage to homes.

“At the last rain we had a lot of mud and everything,” he told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou.

Jeanie Jeffords, who has lived in the area for eight years, said she feels the sandbagging and other work will be enough to prevent a repeat of last month’s flooding.

“We’ve made it this far and my house is fine, so I'm really thankful for that,” she said.

Pacific Coast Highway is closed from Chautauqua Blvd. to Carbon Canyon Rd. out of concern that the rain could trigger mudslides and sweep cars off the roadway. Residents with permits to enter the area will have to use Sunset Blvd. to get in and out.
