The victim was identified as Nicholas Griego, 31, of Palm Desert, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The intersection of Cathedral Canyon and East Palm Canyon drives was closed for an unspecified amount of time. The circumstances of the crash remained under investigation, however, photos from the scene showed a motorcycle on its side and a pickup. Reports from the scene indicated that the pickup driver -- who was also a Palm Springs Police Department employee -- remained at the scene.

"The Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) deeply mourns the loss of Community Service Officer Nick Griego, who tragically lost his life earlier today in a traffic collision involving another PSPD employee," Palm Springs Police said on social media on Thursday.

"Today we lost a good one. Nick Griego was tragically killed in a traffic accident after working at the Turkey Trot," Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills wrote on social media Thursday. "Nick had a deep sense of love for his wife and two small children and fidelity to PSPD. ... Our hearts are hurting, but we will rise stronger than before for knowing him."

Anyone with information regarding the crash was urged to contact Traffic Sergeant Anes at 760-202-2476.
