We continue our conversation with our KNX Hero of the Week Rene Amy, who is bringing the magic back to Altadena by sowing poppy seeds all over the burn areas.
He told Heroes host Heather Jordan it's all about giving his fellow community members hope.
“I don't care that I don't have the money; it's got to be done,” he said. “So I could have waited around and done a nonprofit, gone through interminable committees, or just gotten it done and I figure one way or another, you know, what goes around comes around. Good karma is not a bad thing to have. So, you know, I'm looking forward to the springtime, no question about it.”
In addition to sowing poppy seeds, Rene is a volunteer ambassador for ShelterBox USA. Rene was actually nominated to be a KNX Hero by Paul Vercammen, another volunteer ambassador for ShelterBox USA.
“My house burned down, I don't know, 40 a.m., 5 a.m. that Tuesday morning,” Amy said. “That Friday, I was with Paul and other folks at the Pasadena Convention Center, distributing humanitarian aid, and I spent, I don't know, a couple or 3 weeks handing out material, shelter box material. So, this is just part of the process of finding ways to be as helpful as I possibly can for my fellow community members because this is my hometown for all intents and purposes. There's really nowhere else on the planet other than, say, the south of France overlooking the Mediterranean, that I'd rather live.”
Rene is also a volunteer ambassador for the Xerces Society and helps with the annual monarch butterfly count. He also plays Santa Claus for the kiddos during the holiday season.
