LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Pelicans center Jaxson Hayes was charged Monday for an incident that occurred in July in which Hayes got into an altercation with a Los Angeles police officer.

Hayes was given 12 misdemeanor charges, including violence against a police officer, domestic violence, and use of force, TMZ Sports reported.

In July, the LAPD went to the Woodland Hills home where Hayes was staying. According to a call with the dispatcher, Hayes’ girlfriend’s cousin asked for police to go to the residence after she received “disturbing text messages from her cousin, saying her boyfriend was 'being loud and violent' and (Hayes’ girlfriend) is scared and can’t call the police herself.”

Bodycam footage from an officer showed Jaxson met officers outside the house and told them they were having a little argument and that she was throwing stuff at him. It also showed police continuously asking Hayes to stay outside and Hayes questioning why he couldn’t go inside his house.

Hayes then asked police for a warrant to go inside his house, to which police responded they didn’t need one in this instance.

As Hayes and the officer continue to argue, another man who went outside with Hayes holds Hayes back and asked the officer to stop touching his friend.

A scuffle between Hayes and the officer is shown and the officer pins down Hayes while another officer tells Hayes to “stop resisting” and threatens to use a stun gun on Hayes.

Hayes is shown saying, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” Those words initiated a use of force investigation within the LAPD, according to TMZ Sports.

The officer was seen tasing Hayes’s chest.

If convicted of the charges, Hayes could face time in jail.
