The person accused in the death of a 92-year-old Hermosa Beach resident has been charged with murder.
On Saturday, police responded to the home of Demetrius Doukoullos for a welfare check after a friend told officers he hadn’t heard from Doukoullos in several days. When officers arrived, investigators say 39-year-old Robert Simmons locked themselves in the bathroom, prompting a standoff.
“After about a seven-hour and 20-minute standoff, the individual came out compliant and was taken into custody without incident,” L.A. County Homicide Lt. Steve DeJong told KNX News’ Emily Valdez. “
DeJong said Simmons, who identifies as a woman named Elanor Beaulieu, surrendered wearing a black suit, tie, and black hat similar to a Blues Brothers outfit.
Officers then found Doukoullos in a second room, dead. DeJong said it looked like the 92-year-old had been dead for a while.
While Simmons has been charged with murder, investigators don't know a motive or how they knew each other.
“Our victim lived alone and would not have visitors,” DeJong explained. “He was 92 years old and lived alone, and being seen all the time alone, so this suspect that we have in custody, we're trying to determine how he came in contact with our victim.”
Simmons is being held on $2 million bail.
