A tornado touched down in Pico Rivera early Thursday morning, according to Dr. Ariel Cohen with the National Weather Service.

"This is a confirmed tornado that moved through the Pico Rivera area at approximately 3:15 a.m.," he said. "This is based upon the survey of the damage that we had seen extend over a 1-mile path length with a width of approximately 80 yards, the final damage assessment rating for this confirmed tornado is an EF-0."

City officials said the areas hit were “within the streets of Loch Avon Dr, Holbrook St., and Glencannon Dr, between Passons Blvd and Pico Vista Rd.”

“Our City Public Works team has been out since 4:30 this morning clearing trees and debris from streets, and Southern California Edison is working to restore power to the affected areas,” the statement read.

A woman who lives in the impacted area told KNX News’ Jon Baird she heard strange noises around 3:15 a.m. and looked out the window.

“The wind was just like swirling,” she said. “It sounded like a whooshing sound. It was pretty loud. It was vibrating the windows and everything.”

Another resident said he heard a whistling sound.

“I didn't think it was gonna stop, and then I go, ‘Oh God, what's going on?’” he said. “I thought, ‘Wow, you know, this is the end of the world here.’  Something's going on here and then I went in my backyard and… my tables, my umbrella flew up in the air…my glass table shattered and broke.”

No injuries were reported.
