Portions of the Sequoia National Park will reopen to the public on Thursday after closing due to the blazing KNP Complex fire.
The reopening is only for day-use, officials stated.
The Three Rivers Ash Mountain Entrance Station to the Hospital Rock Picnic Area will be open for the public to venture throughout the day, according to the National Park Service. Other areas visitors are allowed to go to include Tunnel Rock and Foothills Visitor Center, among other area trails.
Officials say closed off areas are due to “fire risks and damage.” Those closed off areas include the Buckeye Flat Campground, the Potwisha-Hospital Rock Trail, Marble Falls Trail, Paradise Creek Trail, and Potwisha Campground.
The park closed in September as the KNP Complex fire threatened the park’s ancient trees. The fire was ignited by lightning and torched over 88,300 acres. The InciWeb reported the fire is currently 75 percent contained.
The park’s infamous “Four Guardsmen” – which form the entry on the road to forest – were unscathed due to “the removal of nearby vegetation and by wrapping fire-resistant material around the bases of the trees,” according to the Associated Press.
