The shooting was reported at 11:40 a.m. in the area of Century Boulevard and Central Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The victim, believed to be about 35 years old, was conscious and breathing when taken to a hospital, said LAPD Officer Drake Madison.
The LAPD confirmed a broadcast report that the wounded man was a postal carrier.
A USPS truck was visible in a news footage from the scene, which indicated the carrier was shot in an alley.
The suspect was described as a male about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, and wearing a black hat, black shirt and black pants. He was last seen fleeing east on Century Boulevard from Central Avenue toward Watts, Madison said.
