The votes for Proposition 1 are still coming in as of Wednesday morning.

As of 7:30 a.m., the amount of ‘yes’ votes is at 50.5% or 1,856,491 votes. The ‘no’ votes are at 49.5% or 1,822,078.

The measure, which has been pushed by Governor Gavin Newsom, would allow the state to issue more than $6 billion in bonds to build places for those who need mental health care and drug or alcohol treatment services. It would also build more housing for those struggling with substance abuse and mental health.

Other supporters of the measure include L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna, and Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper among others.

But not everyone is on board with Proposition 1. Californians Against Prop. 1 said the bill is expensive and destructive.

The group cited the Legislative Analyst that the bill would cost at least $9.3 billion and there would be a new annual charge of $310 million “out of every state budget.” The group also said the measure would cut 35% out of the “annual Mental Health Services Act money and dedicate it to other purposes.”

Dan Walters, a political analyst with CAL Matters, said would be highly embarrassing for Governor Newsom if Proposition 1 fails.

“It could be embarrassing even if he wins because there are a lot of loose ends to this whole thing that will take a lot of money and a lot of work to make the kind of transition that he says is necessary to reform mental health care in California,” he said.
