Efforts to save a stretch of wetlands near Topanga Canyon will kick off Saturday.

The Topanga Lagoon Restoration Project is described as a multiagency cooperative effort that aims to “restore the Topanga Lagoon ecosystem,” according to the project’s website.

State and local agencies involved in the effort includes California State Parks, CalTrans, County of Los Angeles Department of Beaches, and Harbors and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains.

Jamie King a senior biologist with the Resource Conservation District in the Santa Monica Mountains, told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou the goal is to expand and protect 90 acres of the wetland area.

“We're expanding lagoons so that the endangered steelhead trout and Thai water gobi have a place to continue to thrive and survive over the long run and that we protect the infrastructure on the beach and along the highway,” she said.

Two meetings for public comment are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24 and Wednesday, Feb. 28. To RSVP for those meetings, click here.

The public can offer public comments online until April 12th.
