An increasingly popular fast food chain wants permission to take over the iconic Norms restaurant on La Cienega Blvd. in West Hollywood.
Norms has been a beloved local landmark since its opening in 1957, and a recognized historic monument since 2015. But the diner faces closure when its lease is up next December, and the location may be turned into a Raising Cane’s.
Raising Cane’s representatives say they don’t plan to change the building’s architecture, which is one of the last remaining examples of the midcentury Googie style. But they do want to change the iconic “Norms” sign to read “Cane’s.”
“People have been coming here for generations, so I think it’s crazy that they would remove a functional Norms to put in a Cane’s,” one regular customer told KNX News’ Karen Adams.
The plan will go before the L.A. Cultural Heritage Commission on Thursday.
Raising Cane’s franchises have been popping up all over L.A. over the past few years, with 7 locations opening in the L.A. metro area since 2020. Some noteworthy former employees include World Series champions Kike Hernández and Mookie Betts.
