City leaders in Rancho Palos Verdes have learned that the landslide is much deeper and moving faster than initially thought.

KNX News' Nataly Tavidian reports that the city has been modeling plans to slow land movement based on the Portuguese Bend slip plane, but this bombshell discovery could change everything.

City Manager Ara Mihranian said, "The greater Portuguese landside complex is made up of five sub-slides, and Portuguese Bend is one of them. We're now saying that the tech board has concluded that there is a deeper slip plane called the Altamira slip. It is much larger."

Mihranian said that rather than the five smaller sub-slides initially thought to be the issue, this deeper slide plane discovered about six weeks ago is one giant slide moving 88 times faster than the shallower ones.

The city was focused on installing two emergency de-watering wells, but given the new information, that could change.

The council will explore options during a meeting on Tuesday night, and until they figure things out, it seems residents will remain without natural gas service.
