LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Businessman Rick Caruso claimed U.S. Rep Karen Bass’ campaign hacked into his email during a press conference Thursday.
KABC 7 reporter Josh Haskell tweeted that he and several reporters who RSVPed to Caruso’s press conference received a confirmation email in which someone claimed to be “a whistleblower with the Caruso campaign.”
“After learning about the various scandals Rick has been part of during his time on the USC board (Tyndall, Feelgood, admissions, etc.), I no longer believe he is fit to be mayor,” the message said.
Haskell posted a clip on his Twitter of Caruso saying he was hacked and pointed fingers at the Bass campaign.
“Yea, so we got hacked, most likely from the Bass campaign,” Caruso said in the clip. “It’s a fake email and we’re tracking it down.”
Bass denied Caruso’s claims, with her spokesperson telling Fox 11, "just another lie from Rick Caruso, who has lied about not being a Republican, has lied about being anti-choice, and has lied about his failed leadership at USC."
Thursday’s press conference was meant for Caruso to discuss a Los Angeles Times article that alleged the $100,000 full-tuition scholarship Bass received from USC's social work program was connected to the indictment of former L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office told the newspaper that while Bass is not under any type of criminal investigation, her scholarship and dealings with USC are “critical” to Ridley-Thomas’ case.
Bass released an ad accusing Caruso of failing to protect women at USC from campus gynecologist George Tyndall during Caruso’s time as USC Board of Trustees chairman.
