The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is mourning one of its own after he was shot and killed in Rancho Cucamonga on Monday.

Deputy Andrew Nuñez was one of the deputies who responded to the 12300 block of Hollyhock in Rancho Cucamonga at 12:37 p.m. The sheriff’s office said Angelo Saldivar shot Nuñez in the head and then jumped on his motorcycle and rode off.

Nuñez was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“It's a difficult time for all of us,” department spokesperson Jenny Smith told KNX News’ Emily Valdez. “We rally around each other and we lift each other up, and we know that we have a job to do.”

Saldivar led officers on a dangerous 150 mph chase on the 210 Freeway. Video showed that at one point, a car in the fast lane bumped into Saldivar, causing him to crash. It was later revealed that the driver of that car was an off-duty narcotics deputy, who, according to the department, put himself on duty to stop Saldivar.

Following the crash, Saldivar was taken to the hospital.

Moses Castillo,  a retired LAPD supervising detective, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez that the district attorney’s office will decide whether or not the deputy’s actions were lawful.

“ I suspect they're going to say that, considering all the circumstances, that this guy was dangerous,” he said. “[It was] already proven that he's dangerous because anybody that's capable of shooting an on-duty police officer is capable of doing anything.”

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said it cannot comment on the internal investigation.
