
The first of four sand drops was completed in San Clemente Friday. He sand is being used to stay ahead of any erosion issues that have previously halted Metrolink and Amtrak.
A quarter mile wave of sand was poured along the railroad tracks.
“We started dropping the sand on the beach,” Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener. “We are placing sand on the coastal side so that we can improve the buffer zone between the water and the railroad.”
The trains are currently running, there’s no issues on the tracks. Foley said they’re trying to get ahead of any potential issues.
“So last year, I challenged our Orange County Transportation Authority to try to be proactive because we were doing a lot of reactionary efforts,” she explained. “Trains would get shut down because the debris would fall onto the tracks from the landslides.”

They completed a study to determine where the problem areas were. There will be a total of four sand drops, one on the land slide and three on the coastal side of the tracks.
There will also be a wall designed to hold back landside debris.
